KYBELLA®

Just a bit of extra fat in the upper throat area will create the presence of a “double chin” that may be unwanted to both women and men. The additional pockets of fat cells below the chin (or the submental area) can be caused by aging, weight fluctuations, or genetics that lead to a softer jawbone and chin for a less defined profile. Shenandoah, TX, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul S. Gill and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anita A. Gill are happy to provide a revolutionary fat reduction technique to eliminate neck fat. At The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology, we use Kybella, an injectable approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), as a nonsurgical option for upper neck fat. The active component in Kybella is a synthetically made version of deoxycholic acid, which works similarly like the body’s natural DA to dissolve fat cells. After it has been injected beneath the chin, you can see a visible decrease in the amount of fat. When the fat is gone, the cells will not regenerate so you can enjoy your new, slender neck and defined jawline for years to come.

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidates for Kybella injectable treatments have unwanted fat in the upper throat (submental area), which creates a double chin or unwanted volume. This injection corrects resistant areas of fat that can’t be removed with common weight loss techniques due to genetics, aging, and several other conditions. If you are near a healthy, stable weight, but exercise and diet have not been able to eliminate the fat in your submental area, Kybella may be the correct option for your goals. While Kybella can be used to address small or moderate pockets of fat in the upper neck, significant pockets of fat may be better suited for surgical neck liposuction at The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology.

Procedure Technique

Kybella is done during an appointment in one of our treatment rooms. Your injector will clean the area of your chin that will be getting the injections. A temporary tattoo (a grid) is also applied to ensure the injections are evenly spaced out. A numbing gel can be applied to the injected area if desired. As there are several injections to make, the session can last around 15 minutes. You may require a single treatment to get to your desired look, while others may need several rounds of Kybella injections spaced three weeks between each appointment at The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology.

What to Expect

Injections of Kybella do not need general anesthesia so you are allowed to leave our office when you are ready to return to your daily routine. You may notice short-term bruising, numbness, or swelling below your chin, although this shouldn’t last more than a couple of days. Contact The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology right away if you are noticing any unusual symptoms, including difficulty swallowing, facial muscle weakness, or if your facial expressions are uneven. While the fat cells that are eliminated do not regenerate, the cells left over can grow larger so you need to keep a stable weight after your Kybella treatments to keep new pockets of fat from developing. Ideal results after this procedure leave your neck appearing sleeker and tighter, and your neckline will be better defined.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Kybella cost?

Kybella treatment costs will vary based on how many appointments you need. In your initial consultation, a personalized treatment plan will be made to match your goals. A member of our staff will also review payments we accept in your first appointment.

How does Kybella work?

Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, is designed to break down fat cells in the upper neck. Once the fat cells are eliminated, these cells cannot regenerate. This is why more injections shouldn’t be needed once you have met your goal.

Can Kybella be used to treat other areas of the body?

Right now, Kybella may only be used to treat the upper neck. Kybella can effectively minimize the fat in the upper neck that creates the appearance of a double chin. Kybella isn’t approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for any other areas of the face or body.

Am I eligible for a Kybella treatment?

Before your consultation, you will answer a few questions to make sure you are a candidate for Kybella treatments. You need to be at least 18 years old, not breastfeeding or pregnant, and you should not have an active infection in or around your neck. Before the process begins, you are encouraged to be open about your medical history and health concerns so they can determine if you may be at risk for an adverse reaction from the treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

At your initial consultation, a personalized injection plan will be created to match your needs. Usually, patients get between two and four Kybella injections to achieve their goals. Kybella appointments need to be made around 30 days apart. You shouldn’t receive any more than six injections.
